How I made this block:

Using the same fabrics and method as I did for the Drop of Sunshine Block, I wanted to make a "half-flower" block.

For this one I started by cutting three white "petal shapes" with smallest

  Hex n More  jewel shape

nest seams to sew petals together

sew 2" yellow strips to sides and the top

trim and shape with the half hexagon shape
with the Hex n More  ruler

press as you go

l
my last band was a scrappy 1.5" strip cut from my

bottom block dimension is 16.5"
add blue triangles to sides

add 1.5" band of gray to the bottom for the wall
and 5" band of blue to the top for sky

square block to 12.5" by 16.5 "

I made this block in memory of Krystle.

When I was thinking about what block I wanted to make
for this young woman, a poem that was
My Mother's favorite sympathy poem kept coming to mind ...

The Rose Still Grows Beyond the Wall

Near a shady wall a rose once grew,
budded and blossomed in God’s free light,
Watered and fed by morning dew,
shedding its sweetness day and night.
As it grew and blossomed fair and tall,
slowly rising to loftier height,
It came to a crevice in the wall,
through which there shone a beam of light.
Onward it crept with added strength,
with never a thought of fear or pride.
It followed the light through the crevice’s length,
and unfolded itself on the other side.
The light, the dew, the broadening view
were found the same as thy were before:
And it lost itself in beauties new,
breathing its fragrance more and more.
Shall claim of death cause us to grieve,
and make our courage faint or fail?
Nay! Let us faith and hope receive:
the rose still grows beyond the wall.
Scattering fragrance far and wide,
just as it did in days of yore,
Just as it did on the other side,
Just as it will for evermore.
