An Easy Sew Kitchen Jar Opener
Cut one 6" Square each of:
top fabric,
top fabric,
lining fabric
and
and
(or you could use a small quilt block)
The grip is made from rubberized shelf liner,
which is machine washable on cold and may be put in the dryer on low heat.
I found this easy to work with and am considering using it for coasters and non-slip table runners and maybe even slipper soles.
I assembly lined these and made several in an hour.
I like to pin the layers together with one pin on each side which I remove as I sew.
Make a sandwich by
placing the top fabric square front side up,
then the rubbeshelf liner in the middle
then the flannel or cotton.
Stitch around all corners and three sides leaving an opening on the fourth side ...
Katniss supervised my work.
Trim the corners to cut down on bulk.
Turn right side out.
Topstitch around the square to secure all layers.
I used my walking foot and had no trouble feeding the liner through my machine,
I also tried stitching with the gripper liner up and this also worked well.
I have a couple of these in my kitchen drawer and use them all the time.
These are sew easy to make that soon you will
have a stack of nifty new giftys or bazaar table items.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. WHY I've never thought of that myself is beyond me. We use those grippers all the time. In fact, we have about 6 or more in a drawer in our kitchen. One of the most frequent uses of them is when we eat soup or stews. We use large bowls and put them onto a plate so any spills while sitting in the living room go onto the oversize plate and not carpeting or furniture. The gripper circle goes onto the plate and the bowl on top of the gripper which then keeps the bowl from sliding on the plate.
ReplyDeleteBut, like you, I have problems with my hands and there are many times where I cannot begin to open a jar. That usually happens when no one is home and I am trying to make supper of course, so those gripper circles we use all the time are frequently used by me to open jars. The one problem I don't like is they tend to stretch a little and then they can tear while trying to use them to open a really stuck jar. Having the fabric like what you've done I'm thinking is going to prevent that as it will stop the gripper from stretching. I LOVE this idea!!! Thank you so much.
If I win, I'm not necessarily stuck on any color since my kitchen is a mix still. Some day I hope to have a pretty kitchen and when that time comes, it will be red, black, and white. My original plan was to do the colors of a kitchen based around coffee with beige, browns, and tans/creams. Before that it was something else. Any question why the kitchen isn't finished yet? But, red, black, and white is the final decision. (for now? LOL) I love cherry fabrics, and even strawberries if you have anything like that. And just because purple is my favorite color, I can say too that red and purple go together very well too. :) Honestly though, I'd be happy with anything if I am lucky enough to win. Thank you so much for the chance, and again for the awesome idea and tutorial. I just saw the Hexie Twist and Turn tutorial today as well; another awesome idea. I am definitely going to need to make some as gifts for Christmas. I have an entire roll of this shelf liner which is used for my machine embroidery to cut for my hoops to stop things from sliding in the hoop so I might be able to do a few tests runs soon hopefully.

ReplyDeleteI love using these. I make mine a little differently than this. You can make the 2 layer fabric square first. Turn it right side out after sewing it Iron it flat turning in the raw edges of the opening. Then—place the liner on it and sew all 4 sides. No need to do the 3-layer sandwich which bulks up the seams.

ReplyDeleteThese are the best! Have made many for friends. I find the best liner to use is the least expensive from a dollar store. The thinner the liner the better.
ReplyDeleteI made these for my family and friends for Christmas. They loved them! I even made some small ones for their purses to help open bottles of water or soda. I also had people ask me to make them for them after they saw the ones I had already made.
