I have had a lot of questions about how I did the hair on this
It is a very rudimentary doll and
the hair is far from perfect.
Long strands of yellow embroidery floss were used to make the hair,
sewed then through the top of the head on either side.
and pulled to make the log ends even.
sewed then through the top of the head on either side.
and pulled to make the log ends even.
They are gathered at the neck and bound together
with a sewing needle and more yellow floss
and secured to the neck.
Then they are braided tight and bound together
with the needle and floss to secure the braid.
Then the rough ends were snipped even.
I am a little embarrassed to show you ...
... here is the back of the doll.
As you can see, little doll needs more hair.
If I were to try this again,
I think I would try to make a long part in the back
by adding more long strands of floss folded in half.
It would make for a much fatter braid, though,
and that might be hard to handle.
The pink and blue floss is where the knots are tied
from the eyes and mouth.
You can also see the slit in the back sewn closed.
Well, that is all I got for you.
I am sure anyone who really wants to make one of these dolls
will find ways to improve the pattern.
I would love to see your dolls.
I am sure I would be inspired.
Thanks to all who left kind words on my original post.
The huge piles around the house are melting.
The guys did a good job shoveling us out.
Spring will be a bit delayed here but it is coming.
The maple tree with the broken branches had leaf buds
Our big rhododendron bushes on the side of our house have a lot of damage, too.
There will a major clean up in the yard.
Nonetheless, I am counting our blessings and looking forward to spring.
Happy Sewing!
Thank you for the information. I think you made a beautiful "do" with the floss. I'm happy to see how you did it.
ReplyDeleteThank you, so much for showing us how you did that. I am like Carla, I am happy to see how you did it also. Thanks for letting me know about this post also. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the follow up on those sweet braids, I think she is lovely :)
ReplyDeletePat this is a perfect follow up post on little miss sweetness. I am going on my first quilt retreat on the 19th and plan on making a doll of my own. I'm guessing that a few of my quilting buddies will jump on once they meet her. I'm pretty sure there will be more than enough fabric in the group to whip up a few and I'll pack a bunch of embroidery threads in a variety of colors for anyone interested. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteYour doll is so sweet! I’ve never attempted one, but I’ve always wanted to.
ReplyDeleteShe is very sweet :)
ReplyDeleteCan you extend the hair part down the back of the head, and do short strands that could anchor under the rest of the hair, for coverage without the bulk? Maybe bangs in the front?
