Opening up this

It comes well packaged with two free designs and a place to store your ruler.

My quilty kitties really enjoyed
this specialty ruler and pattern.
The patterns for these specialty X Block and BasiX rulers
not only provide the basic how-to, but they simplify what looks complex
and elevate the quilts to another level.
I am an experienced quilter and designer, but I really needed the pattern instructions
to help me get the hang of these rulers.
Now that I have the basiXs,
my quilty muse is spinning with the the creative possibilites.
My mind went straight to "bookworm" when I saw the name "wiggle worm"
so this sent me stash spelunking to find this
"Goodnight Moon" fabric I have had for some time waiting for the right project.
All the fabrics in this quilt were from my stash.
I used scrappy gray and white 2.5" strips for the background
that were already cut.
Then I cut 2.5" strips from some of my tonals and small prints.
I love scrappy quilts and this pattern is perfect for using up scrap strips.
The pattern called for sewing strips, adding sashing
and the cutting the X-blocks.
The pattern was easy to follow
and this quilt went together very quickly.

After some late night time with my favorite seam ripper,
here is my Wiggle Worm top,
sandwiched and ready to quilt.
I quilted with my heavy duty walking foot.
The binding is my new favorite method,
Two-Color Flanged Machine Binding.

I discovered on this quilt that my zipper foot is perfect for
stitching in the narrow flange next to the puffy binding.
The finished quilt is 48" by 54"
a good size for a toddler.

ReplyDeleteGood Night Moon has to be one of my favorite childhood books. I tend buy it as gifts too. Love your fabrics and that wiggle worm design is too cute. Perfect for this quilt. I must admit looking for the "waggle" was like looking for Where's Waldo. Then I realized I was looking at the wrong photo for it! LOL!! What can I say, I've not had enough coffee this am yet!
ReplyDeleteI think I might have left the "waggle" alone. It was not too obvious and someone might have thought it was intentional. But I am like that, also. I just finished a quilt (quilted and bound) and I see a place before the binding that I could fix. Not sure if I am going to fix it or not! Very nice Wiggle Worm Quilt!

ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try your flanged binding. And I, too, love to use my zipper foot when I'm sewing on binding. Also when I'm doing some machine quilting, to get right up close to the edge. That little foot I never knew existed has turned out to be one of my very favorite things.

ReplyDeleteI like this pattern, to me it looks like a little caterpillar crawling it's way along the path, so adorable.
I to think of myself as an experienced quilter, and when it comes to patterns I buy them but rarely read the instruction... but with mine I to also read the instruction.
This is a great pattern. I like your Book fabric choice. And best of all thanks for the link to the flange tutorial. I want to try that.

My son had a wiggle worm he loved - now 24! Frustrating when we catch those errors but a good thing too. Great quilt.

ReplyDeleteOh, what fun, Pat. It is amazing. You always make any project look fun and especially this one. I was looking for the waggle instead of the wiggle and I was looking at the corrected picture - no wonder I couldn't find it. When I scrolled up, then I saw it - thanks to your clue. Hope you are doing well. I think I'm finally starting to get the quilting bug again. I did go yesterday and enlarge a hand applique (or fusible) pattern. I thought I could just add more blocks. However, the blocks are offset so it wasn't easy to add go from a twin to a queen. However, I could make the blocks 100% larger and viola - a queen with the same number of blocks. I'll make one block to make sure they aren't overwhelming. It's a quilt for me anyhow. It's applique flowers - all the same design - a primitive flower - I would call it. I plan to try to use all polka dot fabrics in the flowers. When I say polka dots, I plan to use dots in all the fabrics not just dots. That means it might be a paisley that has polka dots in it or a stripe with polka dots in the stripe. I think I need some variety to break up just polka dot sizes. I hope it works out. I plan to use small shirting prints as the backgrounds. You have great ideas, so I'd love your input into my idea. I have been trying to collect some fabric and it is not easy to find the fabrics. "Plain" polka dots are much easier to find and my favorite LQS went out of business last year. The other LQS favored by most quilters in the Tulsa area also sells sewing machines and the owner has the attitude that she is always right not the customer. So, I don't go there unless I just have to do so. Thanks for participating in the hop and as always your inspiration.

ReplyDeleteI love that you showed us the mistake. reminds us that we are all do that sometimes. I actually hung a quilt in my sisters room for her yesterday. whe used to have it hanging in her living room, before she movedin with me. It is one I made as a class sample when I was teaching, there is one corner where the block is turned wrong, but no one noticed it till months after it was quilted and hung on the wall!! we left it that way.
