My Sew Sampler Subscription is Back!

 

My Sew Sampler Box for January has arrived!

I received my first box here ... 

Sew Sampler ~ My First Box ~ May 2017

and have been subscribed ever since.

Last year while my son-in-law was deployed I called Fat Quarter Shop and asked them to send my boxes to my daughter so she would have something to brighten her month.  

We also sent a monthly box of snacks and other goodies to our soldier via Amazon.

Now that he is home again, my box is coming once again to me. 

My daughter enjoyed receiving them so much she has her own subscription now.

The theme for this month's box is "Sweater Weather."

Very topical.

We wear sweaters indoors w=in January where I live.

We put heavy woolen coats and parkas over our sweaters when we venture outside.

Here are the goodies inside the weather cover.

The fabric line is

Cider by Basic Grey

I love the colors in this fabric line but have resisted purchasing.

So I am very happy with the Honey Bun fabric surprise this month.

The pattern is nice to and it has a throw size option.

I am happy to have this happy box arriving again each month.

Escape to Tilda's World

 

Sometimes I just like to escape to

 Tilda's World

It is a place filled with fantastic fabric quilts and friends.

The new fabric line is Woodland and it is lovely.

It coordinates well with older Tilda Fabric lines.

I have not bought any of the last three new lines 

but I may buy me a few half-yards of the whimsical forest critters

to add to my existing stash.

It is still bitterly cold here and we are expecting a storm coming our way

 that may bring a foot or two of snow in the next few days, 

so I have enjoyed my visit to the warm Woodland forest.

House Temperature Block Tutorial

Here is today's Temperature House Quilt block.

I am calling this one the "Polar Vortex Block."

The low was 7 degrees F with a wind chill factor that felt -13F/-25C 

The high was only 14F, with chill of -2F/-16

Normally, I chose the colors that represent the actual temperatures of the day

but we are in such an extreme weather grip, I chose the colors to include the wind chill factor.

The light lavender "door" indicates the wind chill. 

I was very windy and gusty today ... Brrrrr! 

This is the frost on one of my east side windows with the sun glinting on the ice.

This photo was taken at abut noon. 

I recall waking up as a child to seeing windows iced over like this all the time,

but it is an uncommon happening these days.

I think this may be because the house has better insulation and storm windows.

I am happy and warm and quilty in my snug little home. 

Here are the cutting instructions for my block.

The top pieces are for the roof and show the high temperature of the day.

The bottom pieces are for the house frame and door and show the 

low temperature of the day.

I have chosen to use Kona Horizon for the sky on all my blocks.

This is the sketch for the block I made then

I erased and adjusted after I sewed the first block.

It is an easy block.

These are the pieces for the bottom unit.

Sew the 1.5" square top piece to the 1.5" by 2.5" door and press.

Then sew one 2" by 3.5" rectangle to each long side and press.

To make the  Flying Geese unit for the roof, I like to align the 2.5" square to one corner 

and cut my 1/4" seam allowance with a corner square ruler.

Any ruler with a clearly marked 1/4" line will work.

This is my preferred piecing method.

You may make a flying geese unit any way you like that measures 2.5" by 4.5"

before sewing into your block.

After I sew and press the first corner,

I carefully align my second corner and again cut away the corner,

making sure that I allow for my 1/4" seam.

Here are my top and bottom units showing how I like to press.

You may press open, if you like.

This is my block for yesterday when it snowed.

The block now measures 4.5" by 5.5"

I Like Thursday #82 ~ Adding Color to Winter Days

 

A rainbow of color always makes me happy. 

These fabrics are for a new quilt that I am (finally) making for 2021.

A "Temperature Quilt" has been on my To-Do List for a few years.

A "Tiny House Quilt" has been on this list even longer.

A quilt that features the Kona Color of the Year ~ Horizon was added Here.

I have decided to check off all three of these boxes in one quilt.

I bought this jelly roll for the "sky" color for all my house blocks.

This is my color plan for my Temperature House Quilt 2021.

This idea is not my own.

I was inspired by a beautiful House Temperature Quilt in a Facebook Group to which I belong:

You have to be a member to see the quilts, but joining is easy

and there is a lot of inspiration in the photos. 

Here are the houses so far for this week.

These blocks measure 4.5" by 5.5"

I am making this quilt my by adding my own twists

I am making the door colors reflect the weather:

yellow for sun, gray for rain, white for snow.

I also added a light lavender door for "wind chill factor"

of more than 10 degrees. 

Yesterday and today are "snow house blocks" as we woke up to 5" of wet snow.

This little sister kitties have been doing a lot of snuggling on the fleece blankets.

The temperature is starting to drop more and temperatures

 are sinking into a polor vortex for the next few days.

I am staying in and sewing.

Fabrics marked and ready for sewing.

These little blocks are easy to make.

I now have lots of little temperature houses all in a row.

Because I was still setting up my plan and finding fabrics, I did not start this quilt until last week and I am currently working on catching up with these blocks so I have the month complete by the 31st.

Even the snacks next to my sewing machine have been colorful this week.

I added my 2nd Round border to my

Mondays have been fun as this is when the new border is announced.

I completed all the blocks to meet the January Goal for my

Curves QAL

I am actually ahead on this one.

I do have a few other "starts" that could use some sew time ...

SAHRR ~ Round 2 ~ Plus Sign Border

 

Here is my second border for the Stay-At-Home Round Robin.

This week's prompt for the second border called for Plus Sign Blocks.

This was a good choice for me because I knew I wanted a less busy border

with a lot of the gray and white background print

to lighten and frame the bold center.

I cut up my scraps and made one plus sign block.

I decided to make three more and use these as the cornerstones.

Then I strip pieced long side borders to match the plus sign.

I am happy with how this frames the center.
