Decking the Halls ~ 2021

It is time to deck the Scrapatch walls

 with warm and festive quilts!

The Thanksgiving Feast was a lovely day with family and friends.

Jessica brined the turkey and it was so delicious and moist.

I am going to be trying this when we cook our next turkey at home.

Her Mom, Linda, had already started decorating for Christmas.

We were very happy to have feasted at her lovely home.

Here I am enjoying her electric fireplace with Mr. Scrapatch and our sons.

I Like Thursday # 116 ~ Seasonal Spice is Nice

"G"  is for Gingerbread!

Welcome to I Like Thursday on Friday again.

On Thursday, my I like Thursday blogging friends

get together to share the things in life that make us smile:

I Like Thursday @ Not Afraid of Color

It has been a busy week.

I have been happy this week stitching this fun new pattern from

They have two other gingerbread patterns in their etsy shop:

Stitching With The Housewives

and I may have to stitch them all.

I purchased the

Gingerbread Cookies Cross Stitch Here at Fat Quarter Shop

There are some other cute Christmas cross stitch patterns here from Pricilla and Chelsea that I would also like to stitch.

For now I am just going to try to get this one done before Christmas.

I really like the attached letter script in this pattern. I made a small adjustment to the small "r" to make it look more like the cursive letter I was taught to write.

This is the first time I have stitched on a black background and it is a challenge to keep my white stitches looking uniform.

Yesterday the weather was balmy and sunny so I was able to work outside and open the windows on the south side of the house for my stay-inside kitties to enjoy birdie-vision. It is probably the last day the windows will be opened this year as it is much colder today and they are battened down again.

For my inside break I enjoyed putting in a few stitches and snacking on ginger cookies and tea. My favorite year round ginger cookie treat is

Anna's Swedish Ginger Thins.

I often have a couple of these with a cup of tea.

At this time of year I love to track down my favorite ginger cookie,

 Walker's Stem Ginger Biscuits

which have pieces of candied ginger and crunch oats in them.  Delicious!

If you cannot find them locally, they are available on Amazon.

One of my favorite Amazon purchases this year as been this

French Style Butter Crock

It keeps butter soft in winter and fresh in summer.

It is two-piece and the butter goes into the "bell" top and the cold water in the bottom keeps the butter soft but not oily. I change the water once a week with cold water from my refrigerator.  No more rancid or hard to spread butter!

On Wednesday, I got together again with my three best friends for lunch and the request for dessert was rice pudding, my friend Elaine's favorite.

I made an easy slow cooker version of this old fashioned dessert ...

Slower Cooker Rice Pudding

½ cup unsalted butter

5 cups milk

1 cup light cream

2 cups uncooked medium grain rice

1 cup sugar

1/3 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon nutmeg

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Additional ½ cup light cream (reserved)

Melt the butter in slow cooker on High. Pick out any dark grains of rice.  Add to melted butter and stir to coat rice.  Add 5 cups milk and 1 cup light cream and stir.  Add sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla and stir until well. Place lid on crockpot and turn to low. Cook on low for 3-4 hours, stirring occasionally, until rice is soft and all liquid is absorbed.  Turn off slow cooker and let set for 10-15 minutes.  Stir in the additional cup of light cream … or more, if rice is very thick.  The additional cream adds a nice creamy texture and flavor.  Serve warm or cold.  Store in sealed container in refrigerator. Makes 6 servings.

Recipe may be doubled in large slow cooker.

Variation: Add ½ cup  or more of raisins ore dates, if desired.

I like to add them in the last hour or so of cooking time.

May you and yours have a happy healthy weekend!

Stitch Sew & Show ~ Week 45

Welcome to Stitch Sew & Show ~ Week 45

The year is blowing away on a crisp fall breeze.

I have had another busy week, but I have found some time to stitch and sew.

I have added a few more letters to my "G" word.

There has been some lovely guesses as to what this may be saying.

Hint: This is a Christmas themed cross-stitch.

I have never stitched on black aida before and it is much more difficult than I thought, especially when using white thread. Every little messy thread shows.

I have also made two more blocks for my Sampler Spree Quilt.

That six and a half inch basket block has some little pieces.

It was fun to sew.

I am thinking of appliqueing a flower or two.

My fabrics are a Christmas line.

So I am stitching and sewing Christmas.

I Like Thursday #115 ~ Welcome November!

Welcome to  I Like Thursday,

I Like Thursday @ Not Afraid of Color

This is the last rose of summer.

This last pink rose on the climber on my garden arch is bravely opening to the sun today even though we had our first nip of frost last night.  This beauty was protected by a nearby fence.  Many of our more exposed annuals were shriveled up this morning. Some of our hardy mums are still blooming.

Most of the leaves on the maples have dropped and the oaks are falling, too.

The colors of late fall are dark and vibrant, nature's fiery salute to change of seasons.  I do love all the seasons of the earth.

I finished my October cross stitching and am planning a winter project.

You can help me decide on my aida cloth color Here.

I have been sewing.  I made some more blocks for my

Sampler Spree Quilt ~ Started Here

This has sat in its project box near my sewing machine waiting for me.   I decided that since I chose a Christmas fabric collection, it may be a good time to pick this one back up again.  I do like making these blocks.

When I have not been sewing or stitching, I have been playing with my new toy:

After reading about her new at home exercise machine Here on Jocelyn's BlogI did something I have been thinking about for some time  I purchased a

Cubii Jr 2 seated elliptical machine.   This  is very easy to use and is much better for me than the older model standing elliptical that Mr Scrapatch has set up in the cellar . I have only been using this Cubii for a few days but my legs are feeling more energetic and I have no pain in my knees.  Since there will soon be ice and snow on the ground outside I will not be getting out to walk and am looking forward to exercising my legs inside all winter. Thanks, Jocelyn, for giving me the nudge I needed in the right direction.

Fall makes me want warm comfort foods, like Mac and Cheese.

I decided to make a veggie based version of this  old favorite.

I made my own version of this classic British dish,  Cauliflower Cheese.

I made this for lunch and leftovers.

For dinner, we had it as a side dish with grilled chicken and a garden salad.

My recipe for Cauliflower Cheese:

1 large (or two small) heads of cauliflower.

I take off the outer leaves and cut into medium size pieces and steam it for a few minutes, just until it starts to get fork tender but still has some crisp.

While the cauliflower was steaming,

I toasted 1/2 cup of bread crumbs in a small pan with a little olive oil.

I also made the cheese sauce:

I melted

1/4 cup butter

2-3 tablespoons of olive oil

in a large saucepan.

I added 1/3 cup of flour and blended until smooth and just starting to turn golden.

I slowly added 2 cups of milk, stirring to keep it from getting lumpy.

Just as it started to boil I added:

1 cup of sharp white cheddar grated

and

1 cup of yellow jack cheese grated

I stirred until smooth, adding salt and pepper and a dash of paprika to taste.

Then I spread the cauliflower gently into a 2 quart baking dish

and poured the cheese sauce over the veggie.

I sprinkled the top with a little more jack cheese, the toasted breadcrumbs and some parsley.

Then I baked it at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes until the cheese started to bubble around the edges.

Enjoy!

May you and yours have Happy Thursday and a Thankful November!

Stitch Sew & Show ~ Week 43

Welcome to Stitch Sew & Show ~ Week 43

I have completed the stitching October Cross Stitch Along!

I have pulled fabrics and have a plan

for how I want to finish and display this next October.

I completed the stitching on last block late on Halloween night.

I have been enjoying this for a few days while I have decided that a few on my stitches need to be fixed before finishing. There is a letter in "Brew" that somehow got messed up while I was working on this that needs replacing. I have also decided that the colored lettering on my Monster Mash improv block needs to be in black like the rest of the lettering. I was trying to add a little color.  I am thinking of outlining the mummy and the skeleton to make them stand out better. This was the last block finished on Sunday night and my eyes were tired.

I loved participating in this SAL which was hosted by

Pine Needles

The free daily patterns have gone *poof*

as they will soon become a pattern for purchase.

Last year the steps to this Christmas Stitch Along

were also free daily blocks and I saved them.

I did not have time to stitch this last year.

This year I am thinking to start it now in November

in hopes I get it done before Christmas.

I have the floss pack and aida in my stash.

I am trying to decide which aida to use.

They are all 11 count:

Choice A : Zweigart  solid Ivory

Choice B:  hand dyed Antiqued

Choice C: hand dyed seafoam green

I purchased the hand dyes online @ Garibaldi's Needleworks

The Misty Grey in my October Cross Stich is also hand dyed 11 count aida from Garibald's.   I like the soft feel of this cloth.

Which color aida cloth would you choose?
