A Hand Work Project

a fall handwork project

Last month I started embroidering leaves on this quilt top.  I am stitching free style leaves with perle cotton.  This is not quilting as I am only stitching through 2/3rds of the quilt sandwich, the top and the batting.  The batting will hide my knots and such from the surface of the quilt. I will be adding a cotton backing fabric and machine quilting in the sashing and borders and maybe around the leaves.

This is top was my August Schnibble last year.
I blogged about it here

... and about the method I used for adding the sashing to the blocks
as I went along here.

At that time I had a specific idea for a pieced backing that never got made.  For the backing now I will probably go for a one fabric in in a fall print.  At the time, my friend Delia suggested a leaf pattern for the quilting in the background squares.  The more I thought about it; the more I thought about it.  It was a very good suggestion! At some point the idea of machine quilted leaves blew away and the hand embroidered leaf idea took root.

I find simple hand stitching very restful.
I need an easy project that I can pick up and put down.
As I count down the days to my eye surgery next week, I am just puttering around in my sewing room and this project is keeping my hands busy and I am enjoying the pretty fall colors.  This project will take me quite some time as I am a slow hand stitcher.
More pictures much later.

Have a happy quilty day!

This is going to be lovely! Free hand would not be for me. I must draw first or it would not look anything like a leaf. It was a very good idea.

What a lovely quilt, I love the hand work on it. I just can't do handwork anymore. It took me one and half hrs to hand so binding around bottom sewing machine cover. Oh well this goes with old age and could be worse. Lol
