FQS Road Trip Bag Tutorial



For my Road Trip Bag I used
Anne of Green Gables Kindred Spirits Fabric by Riley Blake

These fabrics are sew pretty!

These are the pieces to my bag.
I added a couple of design options.  

I added a flap with snaps to the outer pocket.

It still fits a good sized hardcover book
and you can snap it closed to keep it from sliding out
on the ground.

If you are like me, you are always dumping bags
at the beach or in the park and have to pick them up
and clean them off.

So I also added ...

an inner zipper pocket to keep small items, like a pocket wallet, secure.

I cut a 10" by 18" rectangle
and used a 10" zipper for the inner pocket\.

I cut a 14" by 4.5" rectangle for the outer flap

I used my Babyville Boutique Snap Pliers

... to add pink flower shaped snaps to the outer flap.

The reverse side of my bag is plain and the inner pocket is on the same side
as the outer pocket so this side may be used as a pillow in the car.

Even though my bag may be used as a pillow case,
I could not resist making a special pillow  from these pretty fabrics.
to go into my bag.

I cut blocks from the panel border for the front of my pillow.

I made an envelope style pillow back
to which I added snaps to hold it closed.
This is one of my favorite pillow back methods.

My Road Trip Bag and Pillow are ready for summer adventures.

I will be gifting this bag to a girl who is of the age I was the first time I read
Anne of Green Gables.
It is still one of my favorite stories.

FQS Project Remix ~ Pocketed Placemats

Here are my lovely new Remix Pocketed Placemats 

to match my everyday dishes. 

These have been in the works since summertime.

Pocketed Placemats from Beautiful Projects from Jera Brandvig

I chose this project because I loved the soft colors and easy construction.

One of the things I knew I wanted to keep from the original design was the lace trim.

I also decided to add a pocket on both sides of the placement.

Here are the cutting instructions 
for these two-pocket placemats:

Make a 12.5" block for the center of your placemat
(or cut a 12.5" square of fabric)

Cut 2 rectangles 2.5" by 4.5" for the side fabrics.

Cut 2 rectangles 10" by 4.5" for the pockets
(fold in half and place the folded edge at the top
when placing for the pockets.

I splurged on a roll of this gorgeous

Cranberry Lace by La Conner for Lecien

I am using it on the placemats and making napkin rings
and will have enoiugh for another project with my extra
Wild Bouquet fabrics.

I read he reviews of this lace which said it may shrink
so I hand washed and dried the lace before cutting it.

For my center blocks I chose a block I designed myself
that combines a granny square
set on point with easy sew and cut corner setting triangles

This block is called

Garden Granny Block

and is a FREE block
available for download in

Since I am making eight placemats,
I sewed these strip sets to make my block centers.

Here are my 2" strip sets for my block centers.

Here is how I made my setting triangles for the corners of the block.
It is basically two easy to sew Disappearing Nine Patch blocks
cut once on the diagonal to make the corners.

Here are the pieces to my placemats.

I used  Fusible Fleece by Pellon for my batting
because I had this in my stash.

I pressed it to the back of my placemat tops before quilting
and before I added the backing.

Here is my first finished placemat!

The left pocket was just calling out for a matching napkin.

Sew ...
For more fun, I made rolled hem napkins
with the pretty yellow windowpane check fabric.

I carefully cut 16.5" squares of the yellow windowpane check,
Best Pressing the fabric first to make the lines straight.

I just use my flanged 1/4" foot
and rolled and stitched as I stitched.

I also made napkin rings with a 5" piece of lace and a decorative button.

I am sew happy with my lovely new place settings!

I really enjoyed making these beautiful and useful placemats.
