Day 27 ~ Block 27

I am home sweet home.

I sewed today;s block for ...

I also sewed the last of the blocks I needed to make and mail for a swap

and went to the post office.

Getaways are fun and it is always good to come home.

Letting the Cats Out of the Bag

I need to make cats and the cats need to make tracks. 

Between the thunderstorms today, I have been playing catch-up with some blocks

I need to make and mail.

These are for bunch of sweet birthday gals in my 

Me and My Kitty Swap group on FB.

I cut and bagged all the pieces last month.

Yet I am late to the June birthday parties.

So I am letting the cats out of the bag and sewing, sewing, sewing.

Assembly line kitties.

Hopefully I will have these kitties on the way to their new homes tomorrow.

At least I will be early with the July birthdays.

And if I get all of them sewn, I will be ready for the August 

and September ones, too.

Back to sewing before the thunder and lightning descend again

or I fall asleep counting kitties jumping over the sewing machine.

Tomorrow is forecast to be hot and sunny again.

The Right Katitude

Four Katitide Blocks for four birthday friends.

I cut a few of these and put the in baggies and then follow my own

My personal katitude is a gray today.
It is raining and cold.
The windows are closed.
The heat is on.

I am still waiting for my long arm.



Katniss looks confused and is saying, 
"What is happening here in our favorite room?"

While I am waiting I am packing up and moving out everything in the old sewing room
so there is room to set up my new baby.
This photo was taken late at night a few days ago.
I have since packed all the loose stuff on and in the old left behind youth drawer unit.
It will probably not fit in the room after the long arm is set up.
I have many plastic bins filled with stuff that I hope will fit back into the room somehow.

Yesterday, I stopped by my local quilt shop from which I purchased the long arm.
They have the machine but the frame will not arrive until about May 1st.
I am counting the days.

I did some retail therapy.
I found some aqua fat quarters to add to my meager aqua month scraps
 and this colorful and bright

There are a lot of nice projects in this issue.

Liz, the owner gave me the package of Handi Quilter bobbins as a gift while I am waiting
for my new baby to arrive.
I am going to go in for a lesson next week on an Amara 20" as
my skills on loading machine need work.

Sew things are looking up.

It is brighter and happier in my reclaimed dining room sewing corner
and the kitties and I are settling into our new happy place.

Maestro, who just rolls with life says,
"This is all good."

Nutmeg says, "Play with this pretty aqua fabric today.
You will feel sew much better."

Good plan.

Katitude ~ Block Tutorial

Katitude Block

12 and 1/2" " Square

This is my first time using these "alphabities"
to help keep the pieces organized,  so I am still learning. 

Maestro thought they were new cat toys.

and re-arranged them for me. 

Cutting:

Focus Fabric (Cat Body and Tail)

A ~ 8 and 1/2" by 4 and 1/2" 

B  ~ 6  and 1/2" by 5 and 1/2" 

C ~ 10 and 1/2" by 1 and 3/4"

D ~ 3" by 1 and 3/4"

E ~  2 and 1/2" by 6"

C E into 2 triangles for ears

I use the

EZ TRi Tool Ruler
(affiliate link) 

Usually available at any place that sells quilting rulers.

Any "triangle in a square" ruler should work 
as long as you cut your strips 2.5"

Background Fabric

F ~ 2 and/1/2" by 6"

G ~ 8" by 5 and 1/2"

H ~ 3" by 1 and 3/4"

I and J ~ 12 and 1/2" by 1 and 3/4"

K and L ~ 10 and 1/2" by 1 and 3/4" 

Cut F into setting pieces

I use the

EZ Recs Tool Ruler

(affiliate link)

Sewing the block:

Ear pieces E and F 

Sew setting pieces to one side of each ear piece,

by aligning the seam as shown,

to make the 1/4 inch seam.

(There is a video in the ruler link showing 

how to sew these angled pieces. )

I pressed all seams open on this block.

Ear Pieces 

 Align and sew together.

 Trim to 2 and 1/2" by 4 and 1/2" 

Ear Head Body piecces.

Sew ears to top of head/body section (c) 

 Back Body pieces B and G 

Tail pieces D, H and L

Sew and flip one L square onto each corner 

of one end of tail piece D

by drawing a line and sewing along the line

 and cutting away corner.

Tail sections H and D 

Sew tail sections H and D together as shown.

Back body pieces B and D

Right sides together, align background section G 

perpendicularly to top right corner Body Section B,

as shown,

and draw a line,

then sew along line

the cut 1/4" away from seam line

as you would for a snowball block.

Head, Body and tail section C

Sew these sections together

and press seams open 

The center of your block will measure 10 and 1/2" square.

Add the block border strips,

sewing top I and bottom L first and then adding

sides J and K.

Press all seams open. 

These strips may be slightly wide.

Strips could have been cut 1 and 1/2" wide.

I like to allow room to square and 

trim the block to 12 and 1/2" 

I designed this block with the border strips as it is made for a swap

and I like my swap blocks to be easily trimmed to size 

to play nice with the other blocks.

The "Katitude" Block

I am calling this block "Katitude." 

This block is inspired my my Nutmeg.

I am sure you can tell which one of the three is Nutmeg.

Nutmeg has lots of personality.

This little kitty has large ears and likes to turn them forward,
and a long, quirky tail,
and sometimes sits on her back paws with her tail up,
which you cannot see in this photo.
I need to catch that in action.

I think I have this block the way I want it now.

I am designing this 12" finished block for a year long 
birthday swap block 
for a kitty quilters swap group on facebook
where I am a member.

I need to get the January Birthday Girl's Block in the mail.
