It's a Rainy Scrappy Summer Saturday ...

... a good day to sew! 

I am sewing along today with the lovely people at

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018

where it is orange month.

I love orange!

I once used the orange Ninja Turtle as a reason to paint my sons walls a neon orange.
The boys loved Ninja Turtles at the time and orange was the  best match
for the curtains with their comic heroes
when we they got their big boys bunk beds and painted over the colorful cars and trucks that drove across the walls of their toddler years.
I think about those fun years sometimes while I sew.

I made three 6.5" blocks today

including this "transition" block which has other colors.

I have been sewing these 1.5" squares together as leaders and enders
for about a year and a half.

I started this scrap quilt Here for the RSC 2016.

I do have a stack of blocks now ... still not enough for a quilt ...

... someday ... :-)

Saturday is Scrap Happy Day!

I am always happy getting scrappy on Saturday ... :-)

Here is what I sewing for the 

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018

It started with an image from my quilty muse,  drawing a  rough sketch,
cutting some 2.5" strips and sewing them in pairs.

Then I cut some 2.5" squares of background gray
and cut and sewed.

This is the Main Block 
and the little cutaway triangles sewn into a mini 2" block.
My quilty muse called me to use these cut offs in ...

the Alternate Block.

Here is the cutting to make two blocks:

Cut four 2.5" by 4.5" rectangles from scraps

Cut four 2.5" squares of background fabric.

Cut one 3.25" by WOF strip

Layout pair units and background squares into blocks as shown.

My method is to use a 1/4" ruler to aligned on the corners to cut the triangles away
without marking
and before sewing

I chain sew the small triangles and corners of the larger units as I go.

I use a flanged 1/4" foot to insure an accurate seam allowance.

I have found this makes for very accurate piecing and a minimal of work.

Even the smallest HST are always a uniform size
and may be sewn together by just trimming the dog-ears.
No other trimming and squaring is needed.

I always finger press or use my roller to alternate direction pressing
in order to "nest" seams.

I do the same with the corners of the larger units.

For the Main Block I found it is important to keep units
laid out in the blocks as I sewed,
so that  I would place the background square on the correct corner
before cutting and sewing.

I sewed the into halves and then sewed the halves together,
nesting seams.

These blocks measure 8.5" square unfinished.

Next Scrap Happy Saturday my post will show how I made the Alternate Block,
which I am now calling my "Spark" block,
and a layout of what the quilt might look like in these colors.

I am now calling this my Court and Spark Quilt.

Dove Gray!

Here are my first two blocks for the 

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018

After auditioning both fabrics, 

I have decided to go with the

Timeless Treasures Sketch in Dove

for the background fabric.

I am designing this quilt to use up 2.5" strips

and to also use the cutaways from the main block in the alternate block.

Which Gray?

Time to choose a background fabric for my 

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018

I have decided to go with a single background fabric for this year's quilt. 

The one on the right is Kaufman's Architextures Grid in Gray.

The one on the left is a Timeless Treasures Sketch in Dove.

These are only block units.

There is a block sketch in the next photo ... 

There will actually be a lot of background fabric in this quilt.

The quilt will be multicolored, from blue to red to yellow to green to purple, etc.

Which would you choose?

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018

2.5" strips are being sorted and used for this year's project.

I have sketched a plan for a new scrap quilt.

I need to find some grey to sew these units into blocks.

I am still slowly sewing my 1.5" scrap squares into 

these Postage Stamp blocks

that I started for the 

RSC 2016

Not enough blocks fro a quilt yet.

This is a leaders and enders project 

and I have a basket full of pairs to sew into more blocks.

I also used up some of the smallest uneven scraps for this 

free form improv  block.

This was my
