Scrappy Happy Improv Sewing

 

Week 1 of my 30 Days of Improv QAL blocks are done!

I will probably use more of the Blue Steel Grunge

 to make these blocks fit together in perfect harmony. 

After I sewed Day 5 Block Posted Here, 

I realized that I almost had enough blocks to make a 

large square block for Improv Squares week. 

So I gathered my scraps and cut-offs from my previous blocks

 and sewed one more 5.5" scrappy square block.

This is one of my favorite improv blocks of the week.

It was fun playing with the small scraps.

I am ready for tomorrow's email giving me the improv challenge of the week.

and looking forward to sewing.

In the meantime, I will be catching up on some blocks for other projects

and enjoying the warm weather and great outdoors and my family.

These blue units are intended for my

Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.

I have also been playing with this sweet fabric

for a heart warming project.

You shall have to wait until next month to see this one!

Maestro is 9 months old now and a constant quilty helper.

Here she spies and empty bobbin on my bobbin winder.

Maestro is very adept at snagging these and finding them wherever they may be,

including ones that are wound with thread.

... perfect snatch ... 

and there she goes!

Now if only I could teach her how to wind the bobbins

instead of grabbing them and running off and losing them under the furniture.

I have some other projects lines up there and more to show you soon.

Multi-Colored Scrappy Month ~ I like it!

Large Thread Cone Block

6 and 1/2" block unfinished

Last weekend I improv pieced a bunch of red thread spool blocks for the

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2017 @ So Scrappy

This month is "Multi-Color" Month

so I gathered a handful of small multi-colored strips
to figure out how to duplicate the 

Large Cone Block

Cutting:

Threads:  

3/4" to 1 and  1/2"  assorted multicolored strips

Background:  

Two 2" by 5 and 1/2" strips white

Two 1 and 1/4" squares

Two 1"  by  3 and 1/2" strips white

Two 1" by 2" strips white

Cone:

One  4 and 1/2" by 1" strips gray

One 1 and 1/2" by 1"  strips gray

I sewed the strips randomly together, 

pressed in one direction

 and trimmed the center of my cone to

3 and 1/2" by 5 and 1/2" 

My scraps are random and uneven strips.

so the resulting thread looks "wonky"

like my variegated threads.

 This is what I had when I started to sew.

I sewed one the corners of the top of the cone 

and pieced the spool strips.

Cut the side pieces and sewed them to either side of the cone.

Sewing tip:  finger press to find the center of each piece and 

align the centers when sewing on the top and bottom.

Sew on top and bottom of cone.

Trim square to 6 and 1/2"
