Cable Stitch Crochet ~ I Think I Have Got It

 I think I have got it!

Here is the first cable stitch for my Block 17:

Pattern 9 ~ Cable Stitch Square @ The Inspired Wren

I am making the two sided pattern and this is the front

 which has one cable centered framed by Front Post Single Crochets (FPSC)

Here is the back of the block which has two cables 

and four spaced FPSC.

I am following the pattern as written and it working well for me.

This is a good thing because I cannot find a video which has this same cable stitch pattern anywhere on the internet.

I believe this is the first time I have ever done a cable crochet stitch.

I am feeling pretty good about completing this block and maybe attempting another cable crochet project in the future.

Crochet ~ Gauge

 

Friday was a busy day around the house and I made only this progress on my 

crocheted sampler square Block 17.

This may not look like much but is an important step.

I started yesterday with my 6mm Crochet Hook J to make the first of my blocks for

Pattern 9 ~ Cable Stitch Square @ The Inspired Wren

Then I realized something was amiss and I set it aside to think overnight.

When I measured my block it was much too long. 

My blocks have all be finishing at 12" square.

This one would work up to be at least 14" when bordered and blocked.

The remedy was to pull my size I (5.5mm) crochet hook, get another ball of yarn and start over.

As you can see in the top photo this one should work up to the 12" needed to fit this block with the other blocks.

I have no idea why the same size hook I used for this block will not work.

It is one of the mysteries of "gauge."

Gauge essentially means means the number of stitches per inch and rows per inch that result from a specified yarn worked with a specified-size hook and it has to be measured to achieve the right size.

Gauge is given in all patterns and a particular hook is suggested.

Since everyone crochets differently in terms of tightness, the measurements of individual work can vary greatly when using the same-size hook and yarn.

I typically crochet tightly and have to sometimes make a conscious effort to relax my hands to maintain evenness in my rows.  Otherwise my width will start measuring smaller as I work the rows.

I have other crochet hooks, including smooth bamboo ones and more ergonomic handled ones but these consistently feel the best in my hand.

Other hooks can cause my hands to ache and limits my creative time.

These are pricey but they are worth the cost in my estimation.

Making beautiful things should be done with beautiful tools.

This is the two sided block which I will be making.

There is an option for a one sided block.

I really want to make the more challenging block.

Someday I would love to make the 

Cable Throw by Michele Maks

which inspired this block.

When I was in my twenties I aspired to knit a cable sweater in an 

Aran Isles Pattern Sweater

I love this type of sweater though I have never owned one.

Alas, my knitting skills never reached the level to make this pattern. 

I did consider making a crochet version at that tome, but it never happened.

Knitting anything is much too challenging for my eye sight and hands these days.

So I shall be quite content if I first make this block for my current project

 and then maybe attempt a Cable Crochet Throw Blanket like the one linked above or this

I think this is a reasonable goal for me.

My kitties were my helpers while I sipped my morning coffee.

Katniss does seem to be more interested in the birds flocking to the feeders

outside our door. It is partly sunny but cold and breezy today.

There has even been a few flakes falling.

Nutmeg looks to be asking for a snack.

Kitty may have been disappointed with my choice of mid-morning snack.

Veggies and hummus is not on her list of preferred human treats.

Chickpea Salad Recipe

This recipe is very adaptable.

I had no avocado and would only have added it if it were going to be eaten the same day.  This went into the fridge and Mr. Scrapatch has taken it to go with his lunch this week, too.

I also did not add cilantro.  I used basil and parsley instead and added celery seed and Zaatar and scooped it up with home made crusty bread.  I love complex flavors. I would have added thinly sliced radishes if I had them. 

I have made this off and on for years since I was a vegetarian in my 20s.

I have always served meat free meals once or twice a week to my family

Making amends. 

I was away from my computer most of the day yesterday

 and I forgot to post my linky party!

 Block 16 for my 

Crochet Sampler Crochet Along @ The Inspired Wren

is done.

For this block I started and ended with the light gray yarn

 and also use this to frame the center of the block.

I am planning to use the light gray for the border 

and consider it the main color of the afghan.

I am loving this color.

Block 15 Done ~ Block 16 Begun

 Block 15 is done and drying on my blocking board.

This is the first of two blocks in this wave stitch pattern:

Squares Crochet ~ Wave Stitch ~ The Inspired Wren

My first of these two blocks is in the dark pink yarn. 

I have started the second block in the wave pattern

and am using the light pink and the two grays to make a  striped block

that will be bordered in the light gray.
