This is tutorial of how I make my envelope backs for my pillow covers

 with decorative snap closures. 

This is also Part 4 in the
Bone Broth For the Little One Block Tutorials 

This post shows how to make an envelope pillow Back with a decorative snap closure. 

I like to think of this as a two-side pillow.

When these are in use on my sofa and chairs,

I turn them frequently so they wear evenly.

In my house this pillow covered a Christmas applique toss pillow for its photos.

Then I gifted this pillow to The Girl in

My Girl bought a new 18" pillow form as she did not have an extra pillow that size.

I like to make covers for my toss pillows and change them as the seasons change

so I do not have to store them in a closet.

It also saves buying pillow forms.

Here is the tool kit you will need if you want to add snaps to your envelope back pillows.

This is a

Plastic Snap Pliers Kit from Dritz

I have had mine for several years
and it is a Babyville Boutique version bought to make things
for my grand darling when she was a baby.
I have found it has many other uses.
Only the packaging is different. 

Other tools you will need is a ruler for measuring for snap placement
and a marking tool.

I like to use a Clover Chaco Liner
available at FQS and anywhere sewing notions are sold.
You can use a Frixon pen or your favorite temporary fabric marking tool.

Pellon Fusible Fleece
or some other low loft fusible lining
to give your pillow panels body and a smooth finish.

  I chose two fabrics for my back to match my pillow front 
and cut the large side to 18.5" by 16.5"
and the smaller side to 18.5" by 8.5"

These are cut large to fold the cut end and form an "envelope"
in which to insert your pillow form.

Then I cut two pieces of the fusible fleece
to press to the back of these fabrics,
I cut the fleece smaller;
18.5" by 13.5" and 18.5" by 5.5"
so you can fold over the cut end and secure. 

I aligned and pressed he fleece to the back of my two back sections with a hot dry iron
and folded the cut edge over and pressed.
The fold is not fused.

I chose a dark grey Aurifil thread for quilting my green back piece.

I stitched the folded flap to secure.

Then I turned my back piece over and quilted straight lines
and block quilting with my walking foot.

Here is my completed small back panel.

I chose light green Superior King Tut thread to quilt the gray panel.
This was the best color match that I had in my sewing supplies.
I use King Tut 100% Cotton from Superior Threads when I quilt on my long arm
I use this and Aurifil when I quilt on my regular machine.

Here is the straight line walking foot quilting on the larger back panel.

Time to add the snaps.

These are the two colors I had on hand that might work.

I buy most of these plastic snaps in bulk in bags of different colors on Amazon.

My quilty kitty Maestro loves to help with this part of the process.
I have to be careful she does not try to eat the plastioc snaps or hurt herself with the awl.
I love my quilty kitty helpers.

I use my ruler to measure and mark .
I decided on seven snaps for this 18" pillow cover.
I found the center and marked it and then measured 2"  evenly toward each end
for the placement of the snaps and marked with my chaco liner.
I use my awl top punch down the holes on the top and insert the top of the snap.

Then I add the inside snap piece and press together with the pliers one at a time.

Then I repeat the process with the smaller section of my pillow back.
I do this one snap at a time and align each snap with the awl, insert the cap and
other side of the snaps ... they come in pairs ... an "inner" and an "outer."
In the photo you can see the top will fit into the bottom and snap downward.

Here is my finished  and snapped pillow back panel 

ready to be sewn into my pillow cover.

Here are the pieces to my pillow  ...

 a framed pinwheel block that was a leftover from making the quilt.
and a piece of a panel from my stash plus some stash strips,
extra binding fabric, a 20" pillow form,
and my snap pliers,

Most of these fabrics are from
Deb Strain for Moda Fabrics
Some are Eerily Elegant and some are Bewitching.
I love her fabrics, particularly her Halloween designs.

I am not going to do a tutorial for this pillow.
It is basically framed blocks.

I am going to show the details that make this pillow 
sew very special.

I added batting and quilted a free form spider web
on the pillow top before I added the border strips.
This was in part to practice the spider web before I quilted the quilt.
This made for a very nice puffy pillow front.

To make an opening for inserting the pillow form I used my Dritz Snap Plier
and bright orange plastic snaps.  I use a
 Babyville Boutique Snap Pliers and plastic snaps

This is very easy to do,
even if you have a bandaid on your right index finger
from breaking off your machine needle into your finger.

Ouchie!  all these years of sewing and I was dumb enough to somehow
put my finger under the needle late one night.
I yanked my hand back so hard that I broke the needle off in my finger
and had to use tweezers to pull it out.
With lots of antibiotic cream, it is healing rather well.
Back to sewing ...

To make the pillow I sandwiched the top and back,
right sides out and added binding as I would for any quilt.
I used the extra two-color binding strips that
I used to make the flanged machine binding on the quilt.

First I sewed it to the back of the pillow.

Then I turned the flanged binding to the front
and added piping by inserting cotton clothesline rope
into the binding.

Then I stitched it closed with my zipper foot.

This makes a crisp pillow edge.

Pretty and easy to remove for cleaning with the snap opening.

This large pillow cover measures 20" square.

 A Ruffled Feather Pillow! When Madame Samm said "Think Ruffles!"

My first thought was ruffling a feather or two!   My idea was to make a modern ruffled pillow.   Bold print modern fabrics. Low-volume background. Negative space. Textural quilting. Touched by a ruffle.  

So Katniss and I found some feathering fabric.

I have had this jelly roll and charm pack of

 Botanique from Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit Fabrics

 in my stash for awhile waiting for the right project.

The background fabric is a gray crackle piece that has been in my stash a long time and I have used bits and pieces of it in several projects.
It is from the Morning Serenade collection by Grace Pullen from South Seas Fabrics.

The black for the shafts of the feather is a charcoal black from Shadowland by Kona Bay.

I used my favorite Aurifil  50/2 off white #2021 for piecing.

The quilting thread is a "Canaan" a variegated grey #403 from King Tut by Superior Threads.

I have also been wanting to make this ...

Feather Bed Quilt Pattern

since the first time I saw it.

So I used this Free Pattern from Anna Maria Horner

So I made one feather according to the pattern, but left off the background pieces.
I sewed strip sets using the 2.5" jelly roll pieces,
some of which I cut is half lengthwise to make narrow strips to vary my feathers.

To make the ruffle on the feather,
I cut 2" strips from the scraps of the strip sets
and pieced as long strip,
folded it in half
and ...

I ruffled my feather!

Then I appliqued the ruffled feather on to the background
for the top of my pillow.

This is the background.

This is an improv block that I blogged about making HERE.

Deciding where to the place the feather actually took a lot of thought.
I took several photos of different placements and studied them while I quilted.

Then I quilted the pillow top.

I love this type of straight line quilting.

Katniss Helped.

In this picture she looks like she is saying, "You quilt this one.

I am busy guarding us from these pesky birds outside.

I'd like to ruffle their feathers."

Details of Quilting.

Then I added the ruffled feather by sewing it down along the long shaft and
around the inside edge of the ruffle.

This is a view of the back of the quilted pillow top.

The I added a ruffle on either end!

My idea for the edging on this ruffle came from

I used Marcy's Tutorial only instead of folding and cutting prairie points, I made ruffles.

For my ruffles I used some extra jelly roll strips and ...

cut the long charm sections strip that I pieced  HERE

into two long 2.5" strips.

Katniss helped.
Looks like one of those birds is getting too close.

I pressed in half.

Then I ruffled as I sewed.

Katniss' favorite thing about our new sewing space is the view from the window,
as she can see many birds flying

into the bushes outside while she helps me sew.

This was made to size to recover an old plain tan micro- suede sofa pillow.

I like everything about my pillow makeover.

I have a few pieces to make more feathers and I want to make a lap quilt
following the original pattern.
That is a project for another day, though.
I have a lot of quilts and blocks that I need to catch up on,
but you may see feathers in progress floating through my blog from time to time.
