Getting Ready for a Winter Mystery Quilt Along

 

Winter Mystery Fabrics 

These scrappy blue winter fabrics have been in my stash a long time.

They are left from a swap that I participated in many years ago.

I have used some of the swap fabric in a quilt and other projects, but I still have a pile left.  I am using a single white solid for the background. The white is from the "Thatched" collection by Moda.  It is a bright white called "Blizzard."

I am hoping to use some of them up to sew a quick and easy mystery table runner next Monday.

Sew Mysterious Summer

I am a mystery to me sometimes.

I am actually thinking to start a new mystery quilt.

Looking at the
Mosaic Mystery Fabric Requirements and Kits Posted Here

I think the fabrics in the photo above are a match made in quilty heaven.

Most of these fabrics are Art Gallery Fabrics that I found at 

Needle & Foot Fabrics on Etsy

Needle & Foot also has some kit selections here  for this mystery quilt.
Very tempting!

I am sewing my stash for this one.

The pink is an older stash fabric,
all I have left of the pink, and is from Kate Spain's Paradiso line.
I hopefully have enough of the pink.
If not, I will look for a similar match in my stash.

I am really enjoying this fun and easy quiltalong.

Quilting Around The World Forum

As is my preference, I did not draw lines as instructed.

I cut my squares in half and chain pieced them together.

Then  I nested the HSTs together and carefully aligned my Strip Tube ruler
on the seam and cut these on the diagonal.

I matched and nested my center seams and used one pin to hold them in
place until they were going under the needle.

I used the Tula Pink 4.5" fussy cut ruler
that was in a recent Sew Sampler Box to square my units.
It was the perfect ruler for centering and trimming
my hour glass units.
I did the first one on my sewing machine bed cutting mat
before I cut and sewed the rest.

Then I cut and chain sewed the rest of the units,
pressed and took them over to my high cutting table to trim
and square the rest of my hourglasses.

My hour glass units came out perfect.

... and I wonder what I will get ??

Today I am working on making the setting blocks scrappy, too, so the quilt will look more scrapalicious.

Winter Mystery Blocks

Here are my completed snowflake blocks for the The Quilt and Needle Winter Mystery "Quilt for all Seasons" .  I love the fabrics in these blocks.  This pattern will be released soon as a whole quilt pattern on Quilt Woman site and the Q&N Online Shop.

I have these blocks out today and laid out to study the setting.  Because I chose a scrappy background for these blocks, I am going to have to make some personal adjustments to the setting blocks to make my background scrappy happy.

While I am studying this layout, I am sewing my January Swap blocks.

It's a Mystery!

Here is my sewing for the first step of the

 Quilt & Needle Winter Mystery Quilt completed.

Since this is a mystery and a pattern that my SAYM friend, Jess Smith designs for profit as well as fun, I cannot reveal more.

I can tell you that I love, love, love, love this pattern.  That is four "loves" because the design is actually four quilts in one.  It can be made as individual wall or baby size quilts or sewed together into a king size quilt.  I have plans to make all four designs, one for each season, and am choosing my fabrics so that I can group them together on a wall or maybe make the king size.  I am also using a scrappy background and may use some more of my snowflake fabric scraps in other parts of the quilt as well.  I love the visual texture of scrappy quilts.  I also love using up some of my smaller pieces of fabric.

One quilt top is an easy weekend of sewing.

It snowed here yesterday ... a really good day to stay in and sew. This is what my backyard looked like late last night. Today the guys are shoveling ... another good day to stay in and sew.

Making a Sewing Room a Quilty Home

My Sisterhood of Quilters
are now keeping me company in
 My New Sewing Room

This quilt is one of my favorites.  I started it when I went to the Quilt and Needle Retreat in Texas in March, 2009, so that I could meet some of my online quilty friends.  It is a very special quilt for many reasons.  It is one of Jess Smith's Mystery patterns.  Jess kitted it especially for me from fabrics from her shop to which I added one fabric from my stash from home.  I got to start sewing this one with her and her Mom, Miss Connie, and Miss Cindy, Miss Nancy, Miss Jami, Miss Milica, and Miss Lizzie.  I also got to meet some of my other quilty friends and their families.  The sisterhood of quilter's panel is signed by them.  When I sew now in my quilty room, they keep me company.

I have always loved the colors in this quilt. 

It was a big job to hang as it is a big quilt.  It takes up the entire wall.  I do have more plans for this wall, too.  These are "coming soon."

I am also adding some easy and inexpensive touches to make my sewing space more efficient and organized.  Some of these items, like the thread racks, I actually won in a basket at a quilt show a few years ago and have never had a place to hang them before.

My quilty kitties are settling in, too ...

Butterfly says "Mine!"

 

Katniss says, "No! Mine!"

 

... while attempting to claim "the best spot" and other feline jostling for position.

Obviously, they both want the nice soft flannel bed by the window. There is some hissy fitting but the fur is starting to settle.  Both are assertive and territorial cats, but they are big marshmallows. The may hiss and growl but their fur does not stand on end and they do not go for the neck. If you do not have cats, this means they are not really fighting.

 Pat says, "Excuse me. Mine!"

Mysterious HSTs

8 x 17 = 136 HST

The new mystery quilt is still a mystery to me.

I can tell you it has 136 half square triangles in it.

I like half square triangles. They are sew versatile.

I learned a new method of making 8 HST at once.  Nice!

I like this method and will use it again, so I researched and found this nifty tutorial ... Half-Square Triangles Shortcut by Katie's Quilts and Crafts ... to help me with the math to figure out how to make these HST in all sizes.  Thanks, Katie. :)

Note: My 10" squares were all from a layer cake swap

and were all slightly different sizes to start and this

may have necessitated a little extra trimming.

sew just to the cutting side of the drawn line for accurate 1/4" seams

 

Note: What I call an accurate 1/4" seam, others refer to as a scant 1/4" seam. To learn more about this scant 1/4" seam, click on this tutorial by  A Quilting Life.  I personally feel that anything less than this is less than 1/4" seam and may compromise the life of the seams of my quilt. I have found that on my Janome 6600p the needle setting is 3.8 to achieve this accurate 1/4" seam.
