Sewing the Scrappy Irish Chain Dresden Plate Quilt Again.

As my readers know, I started this quilt a s part of the 

Scrappy Irish Chain Sew Along @ Coriander Quilts

and was making good progress in January and February.

I was at the point where my blocks were complete 

and I was sewing the blocks together into rows.

Then in early March I decided to add Scrappy Dresden Plates

to the center of my alternate blocks.

Then the great dining room renovation happened.

 

 At the end of August, my qulty kitties and I were at last able to set up 

our sewing corner again. 

In September, my quilty kitties and I 

Finished Piecing the Dresden Plates

and we were ready to applique.

and it looked like we were back on track.

Then life happened and then holidays happened

and this project was tucked into a box.

Until now.

My kitties and I are playing with these pretty fabrics again

Finishing up the 12 circles needed for the center of the plates.

I am using the non-fusible interfacing method to sew,

turn and make rounded centers.

My sewing machine boss kitty has been very helpful today.

We are ready to applique the remaining 11 Dresden Plates.

Sewing them onto the blocks that are sewn into rows will be a challenge.

Scrappy Saturday ~ Calling All Scraps

 

Scrappy Quilters, do you do this, too?

When I am sewing, I take odd bits of fabric from my scrap basket 

by my machine and and sew them together to make a usable piece. 

For the temperature quilt Pine Tree blocks, I get these triangle 

scraps I do not like to toss them in the trash.

So I use them as leaders and enders while I sew.

I can cut these down to the 2" by 1.5" pieces

 that I need for the trunks of my trees. 

Adding some Old Rose to my scrappy tree quilt. 

It reached 49 degrees F today,  barely missing the predicted 60 mark.

There is a winter snow storm in the forecast for next week

and temperatures dropping well below freezing again.

Sewed two more tree trunks pieced from scraps. 

I figure it is a scrappy quilt anyway, so why not use all my scraps.

I do not mind the slightly off look and extra seams.

Scrappy Saturday ~ Jelly Roll Scraps Dresden Plates

 

 Dresden Plate Fan Blades with Jelly Roll Scraps.

This is Part 1 of a 2 Part Dresden Plate Tutorial.

The rain is falling and it is breezy

but the worst of the hurricane is passing us 100 miles out to sea. 

and Nutmeg and I are sewing.

Today is National Sew a Jelly Roll Day.

so I have decided today is a good day to share how I have made

In March, I decided to use my blue, yellow, green and white jelly roll scraps by

Adding Dresden Plates to my Scrappy Irish Chain Quilt

To make scrappy Dresden plate or fan blades.

I use my jelly rolls or other scraps.

These are the tools I used:

my 2.5" by 6.5" ruler

and

my EZ Dresden 7" ruler by Darlene Zimmerman.

Any 2.5" and fan blade ruler will work. 

First I use my 2.5" ruler to cut scrappy

2.5" by 5" rectangles.

Then I trimmed my rectangles into  5" blades with my Easy Dresden ruler. 

Then I fold my Dresden pieces in half lengthwise, right sides together,

and sew a 1/4" seam across the wide edge.

I chain piece these units assembly line style.

Then I turn the points out and press them to get a sharp point. 

Then I lay out 20 scrappy fan blades and chain sew two together,

then those together until I have a completed Dresden Plate.

There are 20 fan blades in each of my Dresden Plates.

My Dresden Plates measure 20" across tip to tip.

This will show how I make the center circles and applique the completed Dresden Plates to my quilt block.

Scrappy Saturday Sewing ~ Dresden Plate Blocks

 

Today for Scrappy Saturday I am appliqueing my Dresden Plates

 to my alternate blocks in my

Scrappy Irish Chain & Dresden Plates Quilt

After pressing the fan blades circles and making the round center 

for the plates, I pressed and found the center of each block as I worked.

I used dots of applique glue top hold my pieces in place while I 

attached the plates to the blocks with a machine blanket stitch.

To make the green center for my plates, 

I used the machine interfacing and turning method.

Then I sewed the round green circle for the center of the plates 

and machine appliqued using the same method 

I used the interfaced and turning method to make my center plates.

Dresden Plate Block One is done!

Another thunderstorm is moving in so I am turning off my computer.

We had strong storms yesterday in Massachusetts 

and thousands in my state are without power. 

Here we had tree debris down in out yard but we did not lose power.

May everyone stay safe and well.

Scrappy Irish Chain & Dresden Plate Quilt

This was the quilt I was working on when I had to move my sewing machine

 and pack up all my fabric, projects, supplies and tools and such

so we could begin work on the room renovations in my dining room sewing corner.

Scrappy Irish Chain Sew Along @ Coriander Quilts

I have seen many beautiful quilts in this fun sew along

 and hope someday I will add mine to the finishes. 

I was inspired by one of the quilts to add scrappy Dresden Plate appliques

 Here in March 

 to the center of my alternate blocks. 

My sewing time shall continue to be slow and interrupted by other things happening here, but it feels good to have my happy sewing corner ready and waiting for me.

Yesterday, Mr. Scrapatch had surgery on his left wrist to set a fracture he received in a fall while working in the yard at the end of last week. 

This is only one of the heath issues we have had here this summer.

We are working on getting better and getting all we need to do done.

Carrying on here in the scrapatch.
