SAHRR ~ Round 2 ~ Plus Sign Border

Here is my second border for the Stay-At-Home Round Robin.

This week's prompt for the second border called for Plus Sign Blocks.

This was a good choice for me because I knew I wanted a less busy border

with a lot of the gray and white background print

to lighten and frame the bold center.

I cut up my scraps and made one plus sign block.

I decided to make three more and use these as the cornerstones.

Then I strip pieced long side borders to match the plus sign.

I am happy with how this frames the center.

This is for the

All you Need to Know to Join SAHRR @ Quilting Gail

The prompts are weekly on Mondays.

This is where I started with this orphan Star Chain Block at center.

This is my first border, which called for piano keys.

I am very much enjoying building this quilt.

Thanks to

Emily @ The Darling Dogwood

for organizing this week's round.

Looking forward to seeing what next week's border will be.

Another Stitchin' Sisters Round Robin Update

Debbieann, can I keep it?

Better yet ... after Cherie adds her border

(... of which I have seen a sneak peek ...)

... is it okay if she sends it back to me?

Katniss says, "Pretty please?"

I set this top on point with a 10" wedge ruler.

I pieced the fan blades and pressed the seams open and pinned
and sewed and pressed the fans on the corners.

The kitties helped.

Butterfly was so helpful.

Really helpful.

Then Katniss and I trimmed off the curves.

I had to use a yardstick for cutting as they were too long for my longest ruler.

Right after I cut this corner, I had to take a "cat on quilt" break.

After Katniss moved, I got ready to cut the next corner.

Then Katniss surprised me by jumping back on the table while on one
of her wild romps through the house and sent the ruler flying.

I picked up and re-aigned my ruler and cut.

I did not "check twice, cut once" ...

... oops!

Not one of my best quilty moments.

After much angst and quilty drama,

I made a new corner section.

Can you tell "one of these things is not like the others" now?

No?

Clue: I happened to put it back in the same place
when I repinned it to my design wall.

Still can't see it?

Look closer ...

Problem was I did not have a long enough strip of the paisley
to cut another long fan blade for the center of the fan.

So I had to piece it.

I have come to the conclusion that I love paisley.

Paisley is a very forgiving fabric.

I added two inch strips of a light fabric around the edges to frame and
stabilize the bias stretch in the cut fans blades.

Looking forward to seeing Cherie's border magic!

This Round Robin is rounding third and almost on its way home

to Debbieann.

I am looking forward to my own RR coming home soon.

Stitchin' Sisters Round Robin Update

The Stitchin Sister Round Robin quilts are on the move!

This is Annette's gorgeous border on
Cherie's Round Robin.

"You Should Have Seen It In Color"
by Jamey Johnson is playing in my personal player.
Good song.

"A picture paints a thousand words"  but you have to see these Round Robins
in hand to appreciate all the love that goes into them and
how beautifully unique they are.

This one is on the way to me!

I will be adding the last border and sending this beauty home.

You can see the pictures of all these RR in progress

Cherie is the fearless leader of our RR group
so her medallion is featured in our button.

Next year we will be doing a Row Robin
and we have two new sisters joining our group.
Sew exciting!

I have been working on my 4th round border of the one I have now
and hope to have photos up tomorrow.

Time to get 'er done.

Have a happy quilty day!

Stitchin' Sister Round Robin Update

Here is Debbieann's wonderful border on Gina's beautiful RR!

I love this photo.
It was held sideways so when I turned it to add the watermark
it now looks like it is a flag flying in the summer breeze!

Looking at this RR always makes me think of standing on the beach with my feet in the waves and the sea breeze blowing.
I can almost hear the gulls.

There is only one more border to be added to this lovely Round Robin
and then it will be on its way home.

Everyone on of these quilts in progress are sew lovely and so unique.

You can see all of these in progress in our album Here

One of my wonderful stitchin' sisters found a fabric that was looking for the RR that I have now in a shop near her and went shopping and sent it to me.

Stitchin' Sisters RR Update

My Stitchin' Sisters have been stitchin' again!

Here are the newest photos of our Round Robin quilts in progress.

Above is Tricia's lovely snowball border on my round robin.
My round robin is looking wonderful!
Looking forward to seeing this beauty come home in a few months.
I am thinking this will make a great winter bed quilt for me.
I have always wanted a bed quilt in these colors.

Tricia has given me the idea that all of our stitchin' sisters
should show their pretty faces with one of theses borders, too.

Smile for the camera, my stitchin' sisters ... :)

Tricia blogged about this and her other quilty projects on her blog:

Here is Tricia's own RR in the works ...

I sent this one to Cherie less than two weeks ago.
Cherie's speedy stitchin' had a new border on this beauty in no time.
I love the way Cherie took this photo outside in the sun.
The birdies perched on the clothesline .makes me smile ... :)

I now have this beauty on my design wall.

I have a plan.

I am gathering fabrics.

I hope to have a border on this by the end of the week ...
or maybe the week after ...
I am one of the slower stitchin' sisters.

... just keep sewing ...

Stitchin' Sisters RR ~ TC and the Medallion

"TC and the Medallion"

Debbieann has named her quilt!

I love the way these little stars make this medallion shine.

Annette added the 3rd border to Debbieann's Round Robin
and before she settled on these wonderfully twinkly little staggered stars,
she auditioned this block and she is sending it along home so Debbieann can piece it into the back of her quilt ...

Tuxedo Cat Block

from the book

This is a great block!

I especially love the little white feet.

The Butterfly wants me to make on just like her.  I shall have to put a white nose with a black butterfly spot on the nose when I make her block.

But first I must think, think, think ...

because Debbieann's beautiful round robin is on the way to me next!

I think I have an idea!

Finding the right fabrics in my stash may be a challenge.

Might have to do a little shopping for this one.

What fun!

Stitchin' Sisters Round Robin Update

My border on this gorgeous Round Robin is done!

I think every round robin I work on becomes my favorite,
but this one really is my favorite!

I love fall color and fabrics!

This one was a bit of a challenge.

Not the piecing ... that actually went quite smoothly once I found the right fabrics.

The toughest part was finding the right blue fabric.

My quilty muse and I decided that this quilt really needed a nice calming blue sky
to give the eye some rest for all the beautiful jewel tone fall colors.
I think I tried every piece of  blue yardage fabric in my stash.

I finally found the "right" blue is a stack of fabrics that I have had for years
and have been saving for a special project.

This beautiful soft light denim blue is ...

Joanna Figueroa designed this line is 2007.

I bought some ... wish I had bought more.

I have been saving these fabrics and have finally decided that they should become a
Swoon Quilt ... just for me, because these are my favorite fabrics.

If anyone ever sees any of this blue or the darker denim blue fabirc anywhere,
please think of me and let me know where to get more!

Okay ... enough of my fabric swooning ...

more about the RR border.

Here are all the details ...

The birdfeeder, birdhouse and bird blocks and idea for the birdbath cane from this book ...

I fussy cut around some of the scraps from the focus fabric enclosed with the top.

All the other fabrics are from my stash.

Here are more of the scraped together birds and the detailsof the border stripe fabric
that I used to frame the top and bottom.

left side

right side

a pair of birds flying into the birdbath

detail of the center with the top and bottom border

This top is now rectangular.
It is the first time I have ever sent a RR along that was not square.
I asked the experienced quilter who will have this one next if that would be okay
before I sewed on the top and bottom.
I am sure Cherie is up for the challenge.

Looking forward to seeing the last two borders on this beauty.

Tricia will be getting this one home just in time for the fall season.

I hope you like your quilt, my friend, Tricia!

On My Design Wall

This striking Round Robin in progress
is on my design wall today.

It is my turn to add to this beauty.

Annette expertly set this RR on point to add the 2nd border.

Gina added the first border on this big bright center block.

This is Tricia's RR and she has her own blog and posted the start of her RR HERE

Working on a round robin is a great learning experience.
Finding the right fabrics and designing a border is only part of the challenge.

Making your cutting and stitching and technique match with the other quilters so that the border will not only look good but fit right can be quite a challenge.

This RR is blessedly flat and square thanks to the expert efforts of my stitchin' sisters
that have added their borders before me.

Over the years I have had to add borders to work that was not squared and one side might be an inch or two  more or less than the other borders and then it has taken all my skills to "make it work."

I have always done my best to pass along work to the next quilter that plays well with all the borders.

I stash shopped through my fabrics and think I found some that will work really well!

I also have this book out to piece part of the borders.
This shall be fun!
I love this book which was a find on a white elephant table once at a quilt show.

It is time for me to get my border on and send this on!

More Stitchin' Sisters RR Fun

For the 2nd Border on Tricia's Round Robin, Annette set it on point
creating this big beautiful "Geese in the Air" formation.

The yellow fabric in the triangles is a gorgeous tonal that glows.
I know because this arrived here yesterday for my to add the 3rd border.
I love fall colors and birds so this one will be fun to work on.
I have it pinned up in my sewing area to study it awhile.
I do have a few ideas and consulted with my Stitchin' Sisters.

What would you add for a border?

Any suggestions?

And here is Tricia's border on Cherie's applique basket medallion.
After the eye popping chain and star border that preceded it she wanted to add a simpler border frame.

Here is a closeup of the fabrics and blocks.

This one has two more stops before I will receive it to add the last border.

More Stitchin' Sister Round Robin updates coming soon!

Stitchin' Sisters RR Update ~ My Border of Gina's Medallion

I have this border done and ready to mail!

I cut some dresden fan blades with my Easy Dresden Ruler

These fans are all pieced.
I drew and cut the inner and outer setting templates by hand.

The Stitchin' Sister who added the previous border enclosed some extra fabric from her border and I used this dark blue batik to transition for her border to mine.
The outer turquoise strip is also from fabrics she enclosed.
I will be sending along the scraps from my batik fat quarters for others to use if they would like.

For the corners, I auditioned several ideas and finally dug this one out of a box.

A large quilt in this block has been on my Quilty-To-Do List for a long time.

It makes an 8.5 inch block and is easy curved piecing.

Here are some close-ups of my border:

I was thinking sea glass.

Beach umbrellas.

A soft swish of the sea.

Toes wading in the foam.

I finished this border last night at 1:26AM

Gina, may you enjoy, my friend!

Today will be an easy quilty day.

Linking up today with

and with this new linky party:

May you have a happy day!
