Patchwork Sampler Blanket ~ Started Here in 2022

The large squares were all made from the 

Afghan Crochet Sampler Crochet Along @ Inspired by Wren

Then we made smaller rectangular and square blocks to add to the fun.

All of these were free patterns that we found online 

and links made be found in posts that are labeled  " Squares Crochet Sampler" 

or "Patchwork Crochet."

We completed this

in May, 2022.

I do share is blanket with my sister kitties.  

We love this blanket.

Welcome to Stitch Sew & Show ~ 2022 ~ Week 19

My finished Patchwork Crochet Sampler Throw is 76" square.

When I started this project to revive and build my crochet skills,

 it was to be 20 squares for this

Crochet Sampler Crochet Along @ The Inspired Wren

It soon took a life of its own and I added setting rectangles

 and granny squares and my own border.

I will be adding "Patchwork Crochet Sampler Throw" 

and the hastag  #patchworkcrochet 

to all my posts for this to make them easier to find. 

This crochet throw is a nice size to snuggle under and share on windy days on our yard swing. 

This makes it a nice size for a topper for a queen size bed.

Folded, it makes a nice kitty size cushion. 

Nutmeg is happy to have tested it. 

My kitties and I have started a new yarn project inspired by these sea colors

which I will show you soon.

Maestro seems to think the cat needs to be out of the bag.

Katniss is still inspecting it though to be sure it is ready to share.

Nutmeg is all for testing it and keeping it under wraps,

as long is she may be the one wrapped.

The Scrapatch Cats Crochet ~ Cat # 3

Maestro, who really does not like her photo taken,

is saying, "It is my turn with this nice soft cuddle crochet nest.

Now please take the camera away so I may snooze. 

Thank you, Mommy." 

 

Patchwork Crochet Purrfection ~ Cat 2

 

Katniss says,

Cat On The Lap Crochet

 

Progress is being made here at "Cat on The Lap Crochet." 

This is the first round in border one on my 

Patchwork Crochet Squares Sampler Afghan

Here is the Cat On The Lap, Nutmeg.

Every time I sit in my favorite living room chair to make some progress

the cat hops onto my lap.

I put the WIP away when I am not working on it or the cat(s)

 will be making biscuits on it.

The Cat on the Lap is an immoveable object.

I crochet as far as I can around her.

My hook has reached a standstill here on the bottom of the photo.

Here is a snapshot of the Cat on the Lap from Mr. Scrapatches'

 angle from the sofa.

I asked him not to put my "cat-axperated" face in the photo. 

This is the cat settled in on the chair for the night in my WIP.

I very carefully gather the cat in afghan as I stand up. 

Then lay gently lay her down in the warm and comfy nest on the chair. 

How could I resist this "I Love You, Mommy" happy cat face?

With the cat's help I have finished border one in the dark pink yarn

 and am working on border 2 in the light gray.

Crochet Progress ~ Sampler Setting Strip One

 

Here is my first setting strip for my

 Squares Sampler Crochet Afghan

I made this strip following these free pattern instructions: 

Modern Dash Crochet Baby Blanket @ Daisy Farm Crafts

This stitch pattern is what they call a

Wide Half Double Crochet (WHDC) Cluster.

It is not a pattern stitch I recall ever seeing or hooking before

but I really like the soft thick texture and the fact it is double sided.

Here is a close up of the stitch details in my gray and pink yarn.

I used the swatch width to make my setting strip 

and made my length the same as my large sampler square blocks. 

I have found another nice pattern based on this WHDC cluster in the  

Baby Crochet Blanket Patterns @ Daisy Farm Crafts

and am working on my next setting strip.

Crochet Today ~ Circle to Square Granny Squares

Four Circle to Square Granny Blocks for my

Squares Sampler Crochet Afghan

 

To make these blocks Nutmeg and I followed this free tutorial:

Like my Solid Granny Square Blocks, 

I used up small leftover balls of yarn 

and added more colors after making the first circle to square block. 

Since I wanted my blocks to be 5 inches square,

I stopped at Round 5 so my blocks are smaller than the ones in the tutorial.

My four Circle to Square Granny Blocks are done and drying on my blocking board.

More small blocks coming soon ...

and then time to decide my final layout.

Crochet Squares Sampler Progress ~ Block 13 Reimagined

 

Here is Block 13 for my 

 Squares Sampler Crochet Blocks  

This is a improv of the original pattern:

7th Pattern Stitch @ The Inspired Wren Crochet Along,

which is an easy and fun bobble stitch.

Originally, I had planned to make this block in a solid pink.

 When I Started Here ~ Squares Sampler Afghan,

I had only one skein of each color yarn in my small yarn stash which was several years old.  

After I decided on my colors, I needed to find more yarn,

I had to purchase more yarn and, of course, I could not get the same dye lots.

So if you look close you can see the top three rows of the pink block are a newer brighter version of the same pink. 

After looking at this I decided that I needed to find a way to better integrate the new shade of Petal Pink yarn.

So I pulled out my top five rows and added some light gray and a row of the new pink and a row of the darker Perfect Pink yarn so that all my pinks were featured in this block.

Today it is snowing and I am working on Block 14 in light gray.

I have had several readers comment that they are following my methods in this crochet along for future reference. My next post will be about the adjustments I have had to make to allow for the fact my yarn is not the weight in the original sample quilt.  

I am using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, 

which is worsted weight.

I have eleven blocks done for my 

Squares Sampler Afghan ~ Started Here

I am very happy with how this is working up. 

I am halfway though the blocks in this crochet along:

Crochet Sampler Crochet Along @ The Inspired Wren

My 12th block is done and it is on my blocking board.

I varied from the pattern in the crochet along:

Pattern Stitch 6 ~ Moss Stitch/Single Crochet Stripes.

I made a this fun ziggy-zaggy striped block using all my main colors. 

All the blocks call for a round of single crochet around the borders.

I chose the light gray that I had on my hook at the end of the block for this border.  

I intend to use the light gray as the main color and the in the outer border.

This is what the center of the block looked like without the gray edging.

This block worked up square and flat in part because I remembered how I used to like to start my crochet projects. 

I do not like to chain stitch the start unless I am making something like a granny square or round project.

For scarves and afghans and sweaters, I always started with a Foundation Single Crochet (FSC) row when the instructions told me to chain start.

This is what my foundation FSC row looked like before I started the pattern stitch.

This method makes a nice stretchy foundation row that combines the chain and a single crochet stitch.

I like this method because it is not tight and does not curl like a chain stitch start.

This is my first stripe for Block 12. 

You can see how this looks even top and bottom.

I am feeling more confidant about my crochet skills again

after many years away.

My sewing machine is still sitting idle while I am sitting and crocheting.

Crochet is my happy creative place right now.

I can hear my sewing machine calling my name, though.
