 Welcome to Stitch Sew & Show ~ Week 12

Here is my uppercase F Block.

For April I am joining in this blogging fun:

#AtoZChallenge Started Here on April 1st

I am making one uppercase block per day.

Plans are to make a twin size quilt "I Spy A-Z Quilt"

using my novelty scrap stash.

For April I am posting a quilting related post each day, except Sundays.

F is Fabric ~ I love fabric!

I have a lovely large stash and I love every scrap of it.

My blog is an ongoing testimony to my fabric love.

F is for Fussy Cutting

Fussy Cutting is using a template or ruler to cut a particular motif out of fabric to create a focal point in a quilt block.

Here is a layout for these fussy cut pieces.

Wonderful blocks can me made when fussy cutting. 

F is for FPP

(Foundation Paper Piecing)

Foundation paper piecing in making quilts is done by sewing fabric to a printed paper foundation. 

This method can be used to create extremely precise points and shapes.

Foundation Paper Piecing ~ The Scrapatch Way

This block is also "fussy cut."

This is for my Ventura Quilt ~ Started Here

The fabrics in all these blocks are fussy cut,

... as are the blocks in my companion Trinket Quilt.

Sadly, both of these quilts are UFOs.

I was making good progress until I travelled on vacation and I never caught up.

I need to finish these beautiful starts ... hopefully this year!

I am making my upper case blocks with a jelly roll and yardage from the  ...

Spotted collection by Zen Chic for Mada Fabrics 

and my Spelling Bee book by Lori Holt.

It is looking like I will have enough of each jelly roll strip to also make the lower case block for each letter. 

I plan to use the charm pack for the scrappy I-Spy setting.

#AtoZChallenge2021 ~ E is for EPP

E is For EPP

(English Paper Piecing)

English paper piecing is hand stitched.

The method is wrapping and stabilizing fabric shapes

 around thin pieces of cardstock or heavy paper. 

The fabric maybe basted to the card or secured with a water based glue stick.

 Then the edges of the shapes are stitched together with an invisible whip or ladder stitch on the back of the shapes.

 The paper or cardboard is removed when all the shapes 

are sewn into the finished design.

I leave my papers in my blocks until all my blocks are completed for my quilt.

I started my personal EPP journey with

This First Block Here in 2017

This EPP Shape is called a "Honeycomb." 

The block is called "Patchwork of the Crosses" 

Each block is made with twenty four 1 inch Honeycomb cardstock templates.

I learned how to make this  and bought my kits and supplies from my online friend

I have 26 POTC blocks complete.

I have not worked on these blocks in a long time.

Today I laid out Block 27.

These honeycombs are not yet sewn together,

I am going to try to work on this block when I am away from my sewing machine.

I find EPP is relaxing and easy to carry with me and sew anywhere.

#AtoZChallenge2021 ~ D is For Design

 

D is for Design

Here is my upper case "D" block for my future quilt.

I will be designing this quilt as I sew. 

Buying and following a pattern is one way to make a quilt.

If you want to get creative and design your own block or quilt,

it is easy to do.

All you really need is paper and a pencil and a straight edge.

Earlier this year, when I wanted to design my 

Curves 'n' Stripes Quilt ~ Posted Here

I started with an image in my head, some fabrics that I wanted to use up

... and I drew a rudimentary sketch.

The idea for the scalloped edge came later.

D is For Dresden.

Dresden is quilt pattern which typically has points 

and is appliqued to the block background

 as in this sun block I made for 

This Sun, Sea and & Sand Quilt Started Here

For my scrappy pink and white quilt, 

I knew I wanted to make a pieced, curved Dresden Fan Block.

I used my Easy Dresden Ruler to cut the fan blades for my block. 

I sewed the first block without an actual pattern.

Then I cut cardstock templates so all my blocks would be the same 

as my first block. 

My quilty kitty and I are very happy with our new quilt

and enjoyed to creative journey.

C is for Contrast and Color Value

Color Value is also an important element in quilting 

as enough contrast must exist to make the block pattern emerge.

I love bright colors and textural prints in my quilts.

Charms are 5" squares of fabrics,

Traditionally, charms were cut from scraps and sewn into quilts

where no two pieces of fabric were the same.

Today fabric manufacturers cut 5" squares of fabric from new collections

 and sell them as "Charm Packs"

Today in the modern quilt world there are many patterns designed

specifically for these packs of 5" squares.
