Happy Scrappy Prize Pattern Day!

Here is my Block 1 for my new scrappy quilt!

and I was a lucky winner.

I sew for fun and not for prizes, but two new patterns to sew is fun, fun, fun.

So I went on a mini shopping spree and picked my two prize patterns

I love the fact I can use small strip scraps in the center of the Magnitudes Star block

and scrap stash for the rest of the block pieces.

I will be working on this quilt while I am sewing other projects.

I love to pick up and sew a scrap block or two as I go along.

My other prize pattern pick was this gorgeous

26 Snowflake Complete Set

This is a foundation pieced pattern and very detailed.

I have seen these beautiful snowflake blocks online and

this pattern has been on my to-do list.

I am sew lucky to now have the pattern.

Since I am very much a seasonal sewist, 

I will not be working on these blocks until the snow flies.

Winter in New England can be long, though, and I have plenty of blue snow fabrics

and a beautiful white tone-on-tone snowflake fabrics for the snowflakes.

So I will have plenty of fabric and time this winter

to work on these blocks.

Following the Beothuk Star

My Beothuk Star is shining bright today.

with this lovely 

Seaglass Fabric by Nancy Rink Designs

I played around with the fat quarters and yardage I had 

until I came up with this plan for Version 3.

My first block was completed here.

I  played with the fabric and the layout because I wanted to 

use a square of the sea glass shards on white in the center on my stars.

It also required me to sew the quilt into three sections:

 a top section and bottom section

and a center strip. 

When I studied the layout above I decided to add some of the white

 to frame the dark blue center .

I achieved this by sewing sew and flip squares to the blue background corners,

giving this a "star in a square" look.

I really like the focal point this adds to the center of the quilt.

I also decided to "float" the stars by adding an inner border strip 

of the white glass shard fabric.

When I added the outer border, I added star points

with sew and flip corners to the blue background strips.

I am really happy with how this quilt top looks!

Saturday Sewing ~ Seaglass

This morning these lovely green and blue pieces of my sea glass fabrics
for my

Beothuk Star QAL Quilt

were all over my cutting table.

I briefly considered putting these away for another day 

and'sewing scraps for my usual scrappy Saturday.

I briefly considered going into my quilting room to quilt.

Then I went outside where the sun was shining and did not get back to 

making my quilty decision until after dark.

It was a lovely day outside and we did yard work,

ran errands, lunched out and just sat and enjoyed the yard as much as possible.

Here is Block 2 

This evening I just picked up the sea glass pieces and pieced out.

Because I opted not to cut the centers of my star,

I am devising my own construction method.

I discovered I needed to do this after I sewed 

Block 1

So my seam ripper and I had a fun time taking off the bottom row of this block 

and sewing it into the center strip instead.

Here is one side  of my quilt and the center strip.

The last two corners should go together quickly now.

I am actually ahead on this quiltalong.

My top will be together soon. 

Perhaps tomorrow ~ perhaps not.

I am feeling the pull of the tides as I sew these blocks.

Maybe it might be a good weekend to answer the call of the sea

and take a walk on the sand and look for real beach glass and eat seafood on a dock.

That is something we have done many a Memorial Day Weekend.

All you really need is the 

Sew She Did Cross Stitch Pattern @ FQS

You could use whatever cross stitch cloth and floss you have or prefer.

At the FQS, Kimberly Jolly always encourages her listeners to

" Just To Do You"

to find what works for you and makes you happy.

After much thought about how I wanted to do this pattern and

considering whether I could make the sewing machine look like my beloved Janome,

I decided that my cross stitch abilities are not ready to rework a pattern that much.

I love the sample as shown and I had 10 count Vintage Aida cloth on hand in Daisy white,

I had some good Bohn tapestry needles in a size I can thread and use easily.

I decided to use Aurifloss as my stitches are best on 10 count Aida with this floss.

I am ready to start stitching.

This is my progress on new roof day yesterday on my

Quaker Flag Cross Stitch

I am changing this one up.

I decided I preferred a 13 star canton on my flag.

This one is progressing well and I plan to work on it

when I am outside this long labor day weekend.

Inside I am making progress on my

Beothuk Star QAL

and I need to finish up and pack up some swap blocks for mailing early next week.

I will be home,

enjoying our homey little Scrapatch.

Our new roof has already been christened with the rain and wind.

All is good.

Beothuk Star QAL ~ Block 1

Block 1 done for the 

Beothuk Star QAL @ mmm! Quilts

Since I only actually started cutting and sewing this quilt 

Here ~ Yesterday

I am very pleased with my progress.

I think all the HSTs are in the right places and turned the right way.

I had a very helpful block inspector when I went to photograph this block
so I took it outside to enjoy the end of day sun in my yard.

No roofers today.
Well they boss showed up in the morning.
but he did not have enough workers.
Hopefully tomorrow will be the day.

My hubby did not enjoy getting up early to move his car
 when he is usually sleeping for his nightshift job
and he is even less happy pleased that he has to do it over again tomorrow. 

I am enjoying sewing along

and I love my fabrics! 

Only a few fat quarters needed to participate.

There were some pretty kits, too.

Beothuk Star QAL ~ All In A Day's Work

My morning started like this.

These are the fabrics I chose to use for a quiltalong I wanted to do

that has been happening along without me.

I have been feeling a bit down lately about letting my quilty plans go sideaways.

like the Trinket QAL   which I kept up with so well in the beginning, 

then got sick, then got back on track,  then let slip away from me 

when I made the decision to buy my dream machine, my HQ Amara 20 . 

Then I had to completely mess up 

and reorganize my house and my quilting life.

Now all of this is a good thing and a wonderful adventure.

It does mean though that I am still readjusting to my new quilty life.

I am still finding my way as I go along.

Trying to do all I had planned and more.

I am enjoying this process.

I just wanted to sew this quilt.

with these beautiful seaglass fabrics

I chose this version of the design.

There is a linky party this week for the first blocks 

and I had not even sewn the last installment, the HSTs.

Today I was at the quilty crossroad of deciding,

"Am I going to sew along of this or not?"

I decided to cut and sew! 

3:30pm when my hubby was leaving for work,

I was here when he said goodbye.

I opted to use Triangles on a Roll for this project.

These are the 3" Finished Sized Triangles on a Roll

The process is easy sewing along the lines.

I use a 90/14 needle, my heavy duty foot and reduce my stitch length to 1.8
to make removing the papers easier.

Then trimming the sides of the paper and cutting into triangles.

This is my pile of triangles and my trimmings.

Peeling off the papers.
I do not mine this part.
Much better than drawing lines for me.

Pressed and ready to just trim off the dog ears with my snips.

6:00pm and I had all the HSTs needed for my quilt!

So I went from my start of day with my morning cup of coffee

to this .. and ready to sew my first blocks.

I am feeling quite good about my progress

and I even spent time with my hubby, 

made lunch, did some housework

and sat outside to enjoy the breezy spring day for awhile. 

Now I have to make another decision:

Star Center A ~ the light sea glass shards fabric,

which is a variation from the original design.

or

Star Center B ~ background fabric in the star centers,

as shown in the layout version above.

My blue grunge background fabric looks too washed out in this photo.
Not sure why. Actual color in earlier photo.

Which would you chose?

I even have a few hours left in the evening to decide and to start piecing the blocks.

Tomorrow a roofing crew arrives at 7:00am to replace the roof over our heads.

Tomorrow morning  they will find me 

outside under the canopy on the deck with my morning cup of coffee.
